On April 28th, the Artificial Intelligence Education Seminar and the Publishing Conference for the Textbook Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (High School Edition) were co-sponsored by East China Normal University Press, the Commercial Press, Shangtang Technology, and the East China International MOOC Research Center of East China Normal University.

Weng Tiehui, vice mayor of Shanghai, Academician Qian Xuhong, president of East China Normal University, Peng Weiguo, deputy director of Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau Liu Jianfeng, deputy minister of Education and Science and Technology of the Liaison Office, Tang Xiaoou, founder of Shangtang Technology and Professor of Information Engineering Department of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Wang Yan, president and proprietor of East China Normal University Press and Wang Lujun, the general manager of the Commercial Press Han Fen Lou attended the meeting and witnessed this milestone event in China’s AI education field. The opening ceremony of the conference was presided over by Professor Chen Yuxi, the director of the MOOC Center of our school.

At the scene, the first artificial intelligence textbook “Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (High School Edition)” was officially released by the MOOC Center of our school, Shangtang Technology, and Shanghai’s well-known high schools. Professor Chen Yuxi and Professor Tian Aili of our school’s MOOC center are one of the chief editors and executive editors of the book; teachers from six well-known high schools, No.2 Secondary School Attached to East China Normal University, High School Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Qibao High School, Shanghai Gezhi High School, Shanghai Shixi High School and Shanghai Jinyuan Senior High School were invited to participate in the compilation. Forty schools around the nation such as No.2 Secondary School Attached to East China Normal University, the High School Attached to Tsinghua University, High School Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Shixi High School have become the first batch of “Artificial Intelligence Education Experimental-Based Schools”.

As artificial intelligence gradually rises to become a new focus of international competition, the shortage of AI talents is also increasingly prominent, and the global call for artificial intelligence basic education continues. The “Next-Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan” issued by the State Council further clearly states that “smart education programs for all people should be gradually implemented to provide artificial intelligence-related courses in the primary and secondary schools.” The textbook “Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (High School Edition)” launched by the world’s leading artificial intelligence platform company, Shangtang Technology, and our MOOC Center is a breakthrough achievement of the current domestic AI popular education. Different from other traditional teaching materials, the textbook emphasizes the importance of giving full play to learners’ imagination and creativity. As the chief editor of the textbook, Professor Tang Xiaoou personally attended the first AI popularization class for everyone.

At present, Shanghai Shixi High School has begun to teach students based on the content of teaching materials. It is not difficult to see that Shanghai, in which one third of the country’s AI talents gather, has already exhibited unique advantages in the development of artificial intelligence. Zhang Wen, president of Shangtang Technology, said that with the support and participation of so many well-known high schools in the country, Shangtang Technology is full of confidence and determination in the basic education of artificial intelligence. In the future, Shangtang Technology will also work with East China Normal University and the Commercial Press to carry out projects such as artificial intelligence teacher training, artificial intelligence laboratory construction in primary and secondary school, and smart campus construction and empower the teaching business of our country in the “new age.”

At the conference, Lin Dahua, the co-founder of Shangtang Technology and professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong also demonstrated the artificial intelligence laboratory platform. The experimental platform is equipped with GPU and pre-installed Shangtang’s deep-learning teaching experiment platform software, supports deep-learning model training and custom expansion of the algorithm. It can complete various classroom experiments, homework, competitions, and independent innovation projects with the teaching materials. The results of the experimental process can be visualized and be integrated with teaching materials to cultivate the students’ abilities to combine theory with practice.

In addition, Shangtang Technology has also set up an artificial intelligence laboratory integrating with human face recognition system, crowd analysis system, student behavior monitoring system, teaching experiment platform, robot, and unmanned vehicle, etc. at East China Normal University and Shanghai Shixi High School respectively. Multi-dimensional and multi-layered creation of immersive AI teaching experience has brought new enlightenments to the shaping of domestic artificial intelligence education model. Professor Chen Yuxi made a special report entitled “Building Dreams to Win in the Starting Point” at the conference.
