On October 26th, 2016, Prof. Li Jin from School of Education, Brown University visited Faculty of Education, ECNU and delivered a lecture titled “A Comparative Research on the Development of Children’s Study Beliefs between the East and the West”. The lecture was chaired by Prof. Yang Fuyi, the director of International Affairs Division and almost 200 teachers and students were present.

Prof. Li Jin started the speech from her own study experience and shared her feelings on the cultural difference between China and the West. After doing the literature review in ten years, she made a conclusion that Western study mode was intelligence-oriented and Eastern study mode was virtue-oriented. Cognition and exploration were encouraged to facilitate intelligent study in the West while moral development was emphasized to achieve self-value in the East. But what accounts for the big difference? Prof. Li gave a detailed explanation of the reasons from historical origins and other aspects. Finally, she figured out that instead of impairing each other, the two study modes successfully showed their elementary values under the global background.

The lecture received great feedback from the audience. Teachers and students raised questions actively and had warm interaction with Prof. Li in the field of the development of Children’s study beliefs between the East and the West.
