Department Overview


The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (Institute of Curriculum and Instruction) at East China Normal University isa nationally recognized discipline supported by the “Double First-Class” initiative, Shanghai’s Peak Discipline Construction Program, and the National Key Research Base for Textbook Studies, and the Ministry of Education's Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences. Guided by the mission of “for Curriculum, for Students, and for Future,” the Department closely collaborates with UNESCO’s Associated Schools Network International Center and cultivates high-quality talents who contribute to curriculum reform and bring Chinese educational practices to the global stage.  It currently has 23 full-time faculty members and offers academic strengths in curriculum theory, textbook studies, instructional design, assessment, teacher education, learning sciences, and educational technology.


Established in 1999, the Institute serves as a major national platform for educational innovation. It has been rated “Outstanding” by the Ministry of Education for three consecutive cycles, selected as a founding member of the National Think Tank Alliance, and listed among the top 100 think tanks in the China Think Tank Index (CTTI). Recognized as the “national team” in curriculum and instruction research, the Institute has played a leading role in drafting key policy documents and continues toexert significant global influence through its research excellence and international collaborations.


Program Overview


Title of Major: Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on Global Curriculum Leadership

Language: All-English

Study Period: 2 years (Students who have met all the requirements for graduation can apply for early graduation with the consent of their supervisors)

Location: Putuo Campus, Shanghai


Objectives: 

(1) Developeducational governance leaders with international perspectives, intercultural dialogue skills and skills to initiate and sustain localized curriculum and instructional changes.

(2) Cultivateinnovative specialists who are equipped with research methodologies and scientific evaluation skills.

(3) Cultivateeducational technology leaders who are proficient in digital curriculum reconstruction and intelligent learning resource development

(4) Cultivatecurriculum designers who can integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and design green education solutions


Degree Requirements:

(1) Language Requirements

Apart from proficiency in academic English, upon graduation, international students are expected to passat least Level 3 of theInternational Chinese Proficiency Standards (ICPS).

(2) Credit Requirement

The course system combines cutting-edge theories, rigorous methodological training and practicum training. Enrolled students shall complete a total number ofat least 23 credits, including 6 credits of Degree Public Courses (compulsory), 4 credits of Degree Basic Courses (compulsory), 6 credits of Degree Specialized Courses (compulsory), and over 7 credits of Degree Specialized Courses (optional).
